Within the first minutes of Meeting Standards
it is evident that Clay Moore is a master guitarist with impeccable
taste, technique, nuance, and phrasing. It's obvious Clay has listened
to a broad spectrum of jazz styles, which merge into a unique voice. A
voice that is original and at the same time not contrived or forced in
any way.
On cuts The Shadow of Your Smile and You Stepped Out of A Dream Clay exhibits some nice chord melody work as well as a beautiful warm, round, jazz tone which I am sure will become the envy of many guitarists. And check out the whimsical "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Theme," a real swinging burner. On this tune and two others Clay teams up with saxophonist Rob Lockart, who does an excellent job and provides a nice foil for Clay. On Charlie Parker's Relaxin' At Camarillo I hear many influences, from the composer to Coltrane to Joe Pass to Kenny Burrell. As I listen to this CD it gets better and better.
I'll leave the rest of the tracks for the reader to investigate... I think you'll find this CD a pleasant surprise.

Clay has a refreshing, different sound to his guitar lines. Check out his mix of interesting styles. There's a breath of cool, yet a nice realism to his playing. Eric Johnson |
Clay Moore is one of the young players currently keeping the mainstream
jazz guitar torch alight. He has a good tone, ample facility and a
wellspring of musical ideas which make his playing fresh and
interesting.
The
music speaks for itself, with Moore utilizing a spikey staccato sound
not unlike Ron Affif or early Russell Malone. This percussive effect
provides an overall Bensonish vibe, which is further highlighted by
Moore's bluesy bent...

All the songs (on Meeting Standards)
were recorded live, giving the performances a direct and expressively
intimate sound. Anyone who enjoys jazz guitar will appreciate Moore's
clear, ringing tone and wonderful articulation.
